Just a Dream

When I was a child, I would have deathly dreams

I was always searching for safety

It had instilled in me a yearning to save

I looked for ways to help others

I had a dream

It was the picture of childish fears

The barn I was playing in was demolished

I was injured in that tornado and woke terrified

But it was just a dream

Some days I would wonder where that barn came from and

A time later, I had come a new way to church

Passed by a barn I would have never seen

But I had seen it, in my dream.

Struck by the realization,

I took the dream as a prophecy

That the barn would be destroyed someday

Maybe it was only a dream.

So don’t be mad if I don’t face you, I’m just watching your six.

And if you’re careening toward the road, I’ll be the foot in the brake.

You’re my responsibility,

Because you’re more than just a dream.

The barn lived on beyond my dream.

Years passed and each time I passed it

I was more sure of its doom

Then one day I almost crashed the car

It was true, in real life I watched the dream.

The barn was reduced to a pile of ashes

And I knew for some reason,

I had been given the foresight.

It was just a dream

But it made me realize that

I should notice when strange things happen

Like when a barn you knew would be destroyed is burned

And especially when I have more than just a dream

Like when someone I knew would get hurt is hurt

And someone who needed my help is destitute

I can’t say I didn’t know

Because I had more than just a dream.

So don’t be mad if I don’t face you, I’m just watching your six.

And if you’re careening toward the road, I’ll be the foot in the brake.

You’re my responsibility,

Because you’re more than just a dream.

This is a true story. Thanks for reading!
